How to Use Affirmations

How to Use Affirmations

Studies have revealed that over 80% of our daily thoughts are negative. On top of that, 95% of our thoughts are repetitive. And since we have hundreds of thoughts per day that is a lot of self-deprecating thinking that leads to detrimental behavior. Scientists call repetitive negative thinking automatic negative thoughts and these irrational thoughts can hinder our mental and emotional health as well as fuel social anxiety disorder.

I started Black GiIrl Affirmed at a time when the automatic negative thoughts in my mind were all too consuming. It was a constant loop of berating thoughts and I decided that I wouldn’t take it anymore. I started incorporating affirmations into my daily routine to help to combat those irrational thoughts and remind me of the truth. Affirmations are short powerful statements aimed to affect the negative conscious and subconscious thoughts that run rampant in our minds. They also motivate and keep the mind focused on goals. When I learned how to use the power of affirmations it completely transformed my thinking and ultimately my behavior.  Repeating and keeping visible affirming statements helped make me feel more positive, energetic, and hopeful

Creating and using affirmations is easy. Start by making a list of the negative thoughts that keep your mind spirling in negativity. Confront those thoughts by writing a counter-argument. This statement should be positive, empowering, and edifying.

For example, if you are having difficulty defeating negative thoughts about your body image you’d want to create the affirmations below.

I am beautiful.

I love and appreciate my body.

I am more than my appearance.

My weight does not determine my worth.

Keep them visible and repeat them often especially when those automatic negative thoughts start to appear.

Lastly and the most important part of incorporating affirmations is to believe and act. Believing the worse about yourself is easy to do especially if you’ve been castigating yourself for years. But just as easily as you can beat yourself up you can make a shift to empower and affirm yourself. You have to be intentional and deliberate about balancing those automatic negative thoughts with positive ones.

I implore you to incorporate affirmations into your daily routine. Check out our affirmations or purchase our sticky note affirmations. Each note pad comes with 50 custom affirmations to keep you uplifted mind, body, and soul.
