The world feels chaotic and despairing. Finding consolation with all that is going on seems nearly impossible. The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, making the right to access abortion unconstitutional. And now Justice Clarence Thomas is looking to overturn other decisions like the constitutional right to same-sex marriages and the right of marital privacy against state restrictions on contraception.
For lack of better words, the shit is fucked up. And it becomes an even bigger burden on Black and Brown women. Black women are four times as likely to seek an abortion than their white counterparts. This is due to several socio-economic factors like lack of health insurance and lack of access to health clinics that can provide contraception. Additionally, one Duke University study reported last year that with a total abortion ban we will see an increasing number of Black maternal deaths by 33%. Black women are already three times more likely to die from a maternal-related death than women of other races.
Black women are the least protected in this country and it sucks to be reminded of it every day. The system is so hostile toward us that it feels like fighting a losing battle. It’s maddening to feel this way, all of the time. So what do we do with this feeling, this angst?
Continue to fight
We can’t afford to retreat and shrink into apathy. Apathy is what got us here. Well, that and the 53% of white women who voted for Trump. We have to continue to hope. As long as we have breath in our body then we have the strength to fight another day. You may not have the time to invest in a full battle but there are small things we can do that can contribute to the fight.
There are people and organizations that are fully invested in this fight. Find trusted sources and reshare their content. Stay informed about what’s going on at the state level. There are still several states in which abortion rights are protected. Vote at the local level for your city and state leaders and research where they stand on issues such as abortion.
You can donate to organizations like Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and The National Network of Abortion Funds. You can also find local organizations that support women in accessing abortion funds and clinics. You can also donate your time as an escort if you live in a state in which abortion is still protected. These will women will need your support during a difficult time.
Remember, no one has power or agency over your body. We must continue to make the statement ring true to every lawmaker.
I am powerful!
I have full authority over my body.
I will use my voice to protect the vulnerable because I know that when the least of us are protected we all are.
No matter the odds, I won’t give up the fight.
I will not cower in fear in the face of White Supremacy or misogyny because I know that I am a life affirming source that can’t be reckoned with.
